How BECCS Works

EXPLORE THE PROCESS

Biomass Collection

Forests and plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Biomass is created as a biproduct of forestry debris, construction waste or agriculture as a result of industrial processes. This is then collected and transported to a BECCS facility.

Combustion

The collected biomass is then combusted as fuel for boilers or furnaces. The high-pressure steam drives electricity generating turbines which generates power for businesses and communities.

Sequestration

The carbon dioxide produced when the biomass is combusted is then captured and liquified. The captured CO2 is transported and injected into porous rock formations underground. Overtime, the carbon dioxide chemically reacts with the rock and becomes mineralized.
